There’s something undeniably magical about the beach. The sound of waves gently crashing, the golden warmth of the sun, and the endless horizon all create a beautiful backdrop that enhances any moment. Now, pair that tranquility with the precious, fleeting moments of newborn life. A newborn beach photography session merges the beauty of nature with the innocence and wonder of new life, creating timeless memories for families to treasure.
I met Christine through a “San Diego Moms” Facebook group and she reached out to get a newborn session with her new bundle of joy, Zephaniah. We decided on Coronado Beach to encompass both the sand dunes and the water. It was a perfect night and the sun was glowing just perfect! The beach offers a natural, minimalistic setting that complements the delicate nature of a newborn. Unlike indoor studios with staged props and artificial lighting, the beach provides a soft, natural light that enhances the baby’s features. The gentle breeze and calming ocean sound also helped soothe baby Zephaniah, helping him remain calm and relaxed during the session.
For Christine’s two-year old daughter, the beach session brought a sense of adventure and freedom to allow her to just be a toddler. It’s an opportunity to step out of the traditional indoor photo shoot and into a space that feels expansive, refreshing, and alive. It allowed the whole family to feel more relaxed and enjoyable—perfect for candid moments that reveal the love and connection between everyone involved.
Timing is everything with these sessions. The best time for beach photography is during the golden hour—either at sunrise or just before sunset. This is when the light is soft and flattering, casting a golden glow that’s perfect for capturing your baby’s soft skin and tiny features. Because newborns are sensitive to temperature changes, it’s important to dress them in layers. The beach can be breezy, and while the sun provides warmth, it’s good to have a soft blanket or wrap on hand to keep your little one cozy. I always recommend choosing neutral colors that complement the beach’s natural tones, such as soft whites, creams, or light blues. Once you book your session, I will provide a styling guide to help you choose your outfits that will best compliment the location of the session!
I always recommend just bringing the essentials to our beach session. Because we will have to park and walk out to the beach, it’s best to pack light so we can focus on just being in the moment and not having to lug a lot of belongings around. A few essentials can go a long way in making the session smooth for both the baby and the parents.
Your baby’s safety is always my top priority. I will ensure the spot where we plan to photograph is free of debris, shells, or sharp objects. We stay away from the water’s edge to avoid any risk of an unexpected wave and I will also be mindful of the sun, ensuring your baby isn’t exposed to direct sunlight for long periods.
One of my favorite things about beach newborn sessions is the focus on the details – the wrinkled toes, the delicate eyelashes, and the soft curl of their fingers. At the beach, these features stand out even more against the neutral tones of sand and sky. Part of my unique photography style is that I focus a lot on the details and this is particularly powerful with close-up shots of your baby sleeping peacefully on a blanket, with the ocean in the background, etc.
My editing style also compliments the natural light at the beach that gives off a soft glow, which is perfect for enhancing your newborn’s delicate features. Instead of bright, bold colors, I let the beach’s natural palette of soft blues, sandy creams, and golden hues take center stage. A light wrap or delicate accessory, such as a floral bow or knitted bonnet, can add a subtle touch of charm without overpowering the simplicity of the setting. I can provide bonnets, bows, wraps or swaddles from my studio-style newborn closet at the request of the client.
A newborn beach session is not just about the baby—it’s about the family’s journey. I had the privilege of meeting another family – Bianca, her husband Andres, and three children – through the “San Diego Moms” Facebook group as well. They had just moved down here from LA, as Andres is in the Navy and they were relocating. They had never been to the area before and I’m so glad I was able to not only pick a perfect location for their beach newborn session, but show them a little bit of what La Jolla has to offer. I chose Scripps Pier because it has so much space and freedom to offer for older kids to just run around and have fun. I’m all about the candid moments when it comes to families and it’s easy to get these photos when kids have enough time and space to be just that – kids. Whether it’s capturing the joy in a mother’s eyes as she cradles her baby, or the tender moments of a father holding his newborn against the backdrop of a sunset, these family-centered shots create a deeper connection to the moment.
The natural backdrop of the beach adds a timeless quality, making the photos feel both serene and intimate. While a few posed shots are always nice to have, the beauty of beach photography lies in its organic, natural feel. Years from now, when you look back at these images, you’ll be reminded not just of your newborn’s tiny features, but of the peaceful, joyful atmosphere that the beach helped create. If you’re considering a newborn photography session, I encourage you to take advantage of the breathtaking scenery nature provides. Newborn beach photography is an incredible way to capture the wonder of new life in a setting that’s both calming and beautiful. From the softness of the sand to the warmth of the sun, every element works together to create a moment in time that’s as pure and peaceful as your newborn. So pack a blanket, gather your family, and let the beach become the backdrop for your baby’s first adventure!
